Blue Goo - review
we've had the opportunity to test a new product on the outrigger scene recently. Blue Goo is a cleaning product for surfboards and other water toys. Extreme Cream is a performance hull coating designed to improve glide through the water.
while we're selling it at our website www.outrigger.ca as are several other retailers, rather than spouting hype or marketing drek, we thought we'd give you own honest experiences with this product, along with paddler feedback that we gather..
Blue Goo on SUP boards
Blue Goo appears to be an excellent cleaner for SUP boards, Outriggers and Surfskis. I personally used Blue Goo to cleanup an 11' KukuHoe SUP board and it shone like it was new out of the crate. Blue goo is a turpenol (turpintine derivate) and it appears to effectively remove grime, wax residue and other nasties. it appears most effective on gelcoat surfaces.
Blue Goo on OC-1
Blue Goo is ideally formulated to work on gelcoat and with so many OC-1's ( hurricane, Hypr, Pegasus) employing the urathane or automotive coatings, Ireally wanted to use the product on a painted surface - so I applied it on a silver HYPR Vantage ama. the paint appeared largely unaffected, even though using a turpenol product, i got similar cleanup results to the SUP board, however, I didn;t buff as hard or leave it on until it dried..
I also applied it to the ama and hull of my personal Kaimana ( Kamanu Comp)as the canoe had been a demo, it was due for TLC and the Blue Goo didn't disappoint. the canoe was so smooth and shiny, i kept telling people I was getting aroused by it!
We also tried the Blue Goo on a yellow Chinese Pegasus. this particular canoe had been paddled through an oil spill and "put away wet" the residual stain was allover the bottom of the hull and was/is visually ugly.. while Blue Goo uses solvent to remove impurities, perhaps a pre wax automotive cleaner with a mild abrasive would be more effective. I ge thte impression this is a relatively soft surface and pretty pourous. Blue goo didn;t remove the brown stain, altho the hull did clean up smmoth and shiney.
Blue Goo on paddles
we recently received a shipment of Kia Kaha paddles. as the packaging for these was basically Saran wrap, it left some sticky marks on the paddle surface. Blue goo removes these easily and cleans up the surface of other hybrid blades like Kialoa.
It's helpful to note that this product mimicks the performance of many automotive "pre-wax cleaners without the abrasive qualities used to remove heavy oxidation. I have not tried it on DARK painted surfaces, but would be wearing of susbsituting automotive products for this task. the product took the guess work out of it for me.
Overall the Blue Goo is in a small convenient package ( paired with the Extreme Cream) and for the price is on par with automotive products. i liked the fact that it worked well and there was enough product to do at least two canoes.
I'll review the Extreme Cream next week. some interesting test results to share! (hint - like don't put it on your paddle!)
